Binod Anand’s short novel Vishkanya Ka Prem (Publisher: Shivoham Publications, Hyderabad) is a deeply moving and philosophically rich addition to Hindi literature. The author beautifully dismantles the traditional image of a ‘Vishkanya’ as a mere deadly weapon and instead explores the human emotions, pain, and the natural right to love hidden behind that toxic persona. It is not just a historical or fictional tale, but a poignant journey of the conflict between body and soul.
The story begins in the prosperous kingdom of Dharansh, ruled by King Vikramketu — a ruler who values policy and duty over compassion. An orphan girl named Madhavi is raised by feeding her subtle poison, turning her into a ‘living weapon’ (Vishkanya). Her beauty is lethal, her touch deadly, yet her heart burns with the primal desire for love.
Sent to assassinate the enemy king Dandavahan of Nagriddhi, Madhavi discovers that the so-called enemy is equally lonely and weary. The narrative shifts from politics to spirituality. In the climax, Madhavi drinks the poison meant for Dandavahan and says, “My poison has dissolved in love today.”
Even after Madhavi’s death, the novel rises to a higher philosophical plane. Dandavahan renounces his kingdom and becomes an ascetic in the Himalayas. His dialogue — “Renouncing the body is easy, but renouncing the memory is difficult” — elevates love from passion to liberation. The story concludes with the concept of rebirth, where Madhavi and Dandavahan reunite as Madhura and Arnav. The symbolic ‘Madhavi Tree’, with its sweet yet sharp fragrance, beautifully represents the true nature of love.
Vinod Anand’s language is refined, flowing, and rich in imagery. Poison symbolizes worldly vices and political deceit, while the Madhavi flower stands for purity and surrender. The dialogues are crisp yet profound.
The novel powerfully conveys that true love has no place for possession — “Love ends where ownership begins.” Sacrifice is the fire that turns love into devotion. It also raises a strong voice against using women as mere tools for political purposes.
In today’s materialistic age, this book serves as a gentle reminder of the spiritual essence of love. It is a must-read for students of literature, researchers, and general readers
alike.
Highly recommended.
